We are honored to have our two teams join forces at the world’s premier mountain bike stage race. The Absa Cape Epic also attracts aspiring amateur riders wanting to test themselves against the best.

The trail changes every year but what is guaranteed is a challenging area’s iconic fynbos valleys and majestic views.

This year will be a big step forward for Silverback-Volvo as the team will be competing in the Absa Cape Epic for the first time as support riders for Gluth and Rapael.

26-years old Shaun-Nick Bester & 23-year old Jaco Pelser, are pleased to offer support. Both men started riding at a very young age and have just returned from riding for international road cycling teams abroad.

Martin has experienced the dusty and demanding gravel roads of the infamous eight-day stage race before

For Raph, it is a thrilling step into the ‘Untamed’.

“There are some nerves since this is new, but I am really excited for the experience. I heard a lot about the Epic in the last 10 years through racers, friends, magazines, YouTube and everything, so to finally make it is amazing. I look forward to the race itself, and everything it should throw at us: landscape, safari on the bike, harsh racing conditions. Making new friends on and off the bike as well as seeing new places and getting to ride and race new trails.”

The two men are new team mates, however, after just one week of training the two Silverback OMX riders are off to a fantastic team spirit.

“As the Cape Epic approaches, excitement is an understatement! Training gets more serious and I focus more on the recovery between the training sessions. There are lots of fun trails during the stages and we will suffer hard to keep the lead-group as long as possible,” says Gluth.

Jaco & Shaun-Nick are in the same boat as Gluth and Gagne. Since the season started they have studied each other’s strengths and weakness. The Silverback Volvo riders are aiming to be in the top 5 and to be awarded the highest-placed team in the UCI Men’s category who meets the criteria to wear the ABSA All African Jersey.

“I am here for the job at task, protecting & covering the back ends of Silverback OMX team & gaining experience in this massive event,” says Jaco.  It is his biggest race of his career that he will be participating in. His biggest challenge at the Epic would be staying focus and getting enough rest.

All the fun kicks off at Table Mountain on the 18th March and ends on the 25th March at Val de Vie Estate in the Western Capes Wine farm.
